OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman announced that the next iteration of its GPT series, GPT-4.5, will be released within the upcoming weeks or months. Known internally as ‘Orion,’ this model will be OpenAI’s final non-reasoning model. In an effort to streamline its offerings, Altman indicated plans to unify the capabilities of the GPT series and its reasoning models, termed the omni series. After the launch of GPT-4.5, future releases, including GPT-5, will integrate both reasoning and non-reasoning functions to simplify user experience and enhance the utility of their AI systems.
Additionally, OpenAI’s free ChatGPT users will eventually gain access to GPT-5, while subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Pro will access higher levels of performance.
In related news, OpenAI competitor Anthropic launched an ‘Economic Index’ to assess the effects of AI on labor markets and the economy. Their initial findings highlight that software development and writing account for nearly half of AI usage. The report reveals that a significant portion of occupations now utilize AI for various tasks, with a greater prevalence in mid- to high-wage jobs. Anthropic plans to open source its dataset to encourage further research on AI’s implications.
