Google has introduced Gemini 2.0, its latest AI model, which features enhanced autonomous capabilities and multimodal functionalities. CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the evolution of AI chatbots into AI agents, capable of interactive, real-time task execution. This new model builds on the previous Gemini 1.5 framework, incorporating native image generation and text-to-speech functionalities, alongside improved reasoning skills.
Gemini 2.0 Flash variant reportedly outperforms its predecessor, Gemini 1.5 Pro, running at double the speed. Access is available to subscribers of Google Advanced, designed to compete with offerings like Claude and ChatGPT Plus. Users can engage with the model via Google AI Studio, where they can upload substantial context and utilize features such as audiovisual support, fact-checking, and custom response settings.
A notable addition is the ‘Deep Research’ feature, enhancing in-depth exploration of complex topics. This feature, while still based on Gemini 1.5, allows for a structured research process not previously available in AI-assisted tools. Early tests have shown it can generate detailed reports based on multiple credible sources.
Google also introduced Project Astra, an experimental AI assistant utilizing Gemini 2.0 to facilitate real-time interactions, including multilingual conversations and integration with existing Google services. Despite a lukewarm response on social media, the new Gemini models appear to be gaining traction amid competition from OpenAI’s ongoing product launches.
Additionally, Google unveiled Project Mariner, an AI-powered Chrome extension designed to assist users with web navigation and task completion. The company aims to integrate Gemini 2.0 across its product lineup starting early next year.
In the competitive landscape, Anthropic has also updated its AI offerings with Claude 3.5 Haiku, which focuses on performance improvements in coding tasks, demonstrating greater efficiency and scalability. Both Google’s and Anthropic’s premium models are positioned at a similar price point of $20 per month.
