This week, Google unveiled Gemini 2.0, its latest AI model featuring autonomous capabilities and multimodal functionalities. The shift from traditional AI chatbots to AI Agents is central to this update, reflecting Google’s vision of a universal assistant that can understand and execute tasks in real time. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted enhancements in multimodality, including native image generation and text-to-speech functionalities, as well as improved reasoning skills.
Gemini 2.0 claims to surpass the previous 1.5 Pro model on key benchmarks, operating at double the speed. This model is available through Google Advanced, a subscription designed to compete with rivals like Claude and ChatGPT Plus, and can be accessed via Google AI Studio for a more comprehensive user experience. However, users should note that while the model supports extensive document analysis, it is significantly slower, particularly with large documents.
A “Deep Research” feature has also been introduced, enabling more thorough investigations on complex topics, though it is still based on the earlier Gemini 1.5 model. This new capability is poised to compete with other research-oriented AI services by offering high levels of user control and customization.
Additionally, Google introduced Project Astra, an experimental AI assistant that utilizes the Gemini 2.0 model to interact in real time through smartphone audio and visual inputs—all designed to enhance user engagement and information retrieval.
Google also announced Project Mariner, a new AI-powered Chrome extension that uses agents for navigation and task execution with an 83.5% success rate on real-world web tasks.
While Gemini 2.0 is positioned as a competitor in the generative AI landscape against OpenAI, Anthropic has released Claude 3.5 Haiku, which offers enhanced performance on coding tasks and efficiency improvements at a competitive price point. Both Google and Anthropic’s premium services are currently priced at $20 monthly, aligning with the ChatGPT Plus tier.
