We Checked 1,882 Security Companies Against ChatGPT — 92% Are Invisible
A benchmark of 1,882 U.S. alarm and security companies found only 8% ever get recommended by ChatGPT. Here's what that means for your business.
Watch the 40-second breakdown above.
Why we ran this benchmark
Homeowners don't just Google "security company near me" anymore. A growing number of them are typing questions straight into Google and ChatGPT — things like "who's a trustworthy home security company" or "which alarm company should I use." Whatever the AI says back, that's the shortlist the homeowner actually calls.
So we wanted a real answer to a simple question: when people ask AI who to trust, how many actual security companies ever get named?
What we did
We took a list of 1,882 real U.S. security and alarm companies — independent dealers, regional players, big names, everything. Then we asked ChatGPT the kind of trust-and-recommendation questions a homeowner would type, over and over, and logged every single company name that came back.
No tricks, no prompts designed to favor anyone. Just the plain question a homeowner would ask, checked against a real list of 1,882 companies.
What we found
The results were more lopsided than we expected.
- 151 companies — about 8% — got recommended by ChatGPT at least once.
- 92% of the companies on our list never came up. Not once, in any of our checks.
That's not a small gap. That's the overwhelming majority of the industry sitting completely outside the conversation homeowners are increasingly having before they ever pick up the phone.
Why this is happening
ChatGPT doesn't recommend companies at random. It leans on what it can find and understand about a business — reviews, mentions, clear descriptions of services, consistent information across the web. Companies that have that kind of digital footprint show up. Companies that don't, don't.
This has nothing to do with how good your install crew is, how fast your response times are, or how long you've been serving your town. A dealer with 20 years of loyal customers and a spotless truck can still be part of the 92% — simply because the AI has nothing to point to.
What this means for dealers
If you're a dealer and your company wasn't in that 8%, it doesn't mean anything is wrong with your business. It means there's a blind spot between what you actually do and what AI can see about you.
But it's worth taking seriously. Every year, more of your future customers are letting AI narrow their choices before they ever call a company. If you're invisible in that first step, you're losing shots at customers who never even realized you were an option.
The flip side is good news: this is fixable. Being findable and recommendable by AI isn't about spending more on ads — it's about how clearly your business is represented online.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly did you measure?
We asked ChatGPT the kind of trust-and-recommendation questions a homeowner would type, then checked the answers against a list of 1,882 real U.S. security and alarm companies. We tracked which companies were actually named.
Does being in the 92% mean my business is bad?
No. It means AI doesn't have enough clear, findable information about your company to recommend it by name. It's a visibility gap, not a quality problem.
Is this only about ChatGPT?
Our benchmark specifically measured ChatGPT recommendations. Homeowners also use other AI tools and Google to research companies, and the same visibility principles generally apply there too.
How do I find out if my company is in the 8% or the 92%?
AI Security Edge offers a free AI visibility check that tells you exactly where your business stands and what's affecting it. You can also browse the public leaderboard to see rankings across the industry.
