We Checked 1,882 Security Companies Against ChatGPT — Only 8% Ever Get Recommended

Our July 2026 benchmark asked ChatGPT which security companies it recommends. Only 151 out of 1,882 companies ever showed up by name.

Watch the 40-second breakdown above.

Why we ran this benchmark

Homeowners don't just Google "security company near me" anymore. A growing number of them open Google and ChatGPT and ask a plain question: "Who's a trustworthy home security company?" or "Who should I call for alarm monitoring?"

That's a new front door for your business — and most dealer owners have no idea whether they're standing in it or locked out of it. So in July 2026, we decided to measure it instead of guess.

What we actually measured

We pulled a list of 1,882 real U.S. security and alarm companies — a mix of big regional players and small independent dealers. Then we asked ChatGPT the kinds of questions a homeowner would actually type: who's reliable, who's well-reviewed, who should I trust for monitoring and installation.

We were not testing ads, SEO rankings, or Yelp stars. We were testing one specific thing: does ChatGPT say this company's name, unprompted, when someone asks for a recommendation.

The number that should worry most dealers

Of the 1,882 companies we checked, only 151 ever got named by ChatGPT. That's 8%.

The other 92%? Never came up. Not as a runner-up, not as a "you might also consider" — nothing. To ChatGPT, they simply don't exist as an answer worth giving.

That's not a small gap. That's nine out of ten companies sitting outside the conversation entirely, while a homeowner in their own service area gets handed a shortlist that doesn't include them.

Why this is happening now

ChatGPT and tools like it don't recommend companies based on how nice their website looks or how much they spent on a logo. They lean on what's written about a business across the web — reviews, mentions, structured information, consistency of your name and service area across the internet. If that footprint is thin or scattered, the AI has nothing solid to point to, so it points somewhere else.

This is a quiet shift. There's no dip in your ad performance to notice, no obvious lead drop-off with a clear cause. The homeowner just never calls, because the AI never said your name.

What this means for your dealership

If you're in the 8%, that's a real asset — one that's likely bringing in calls you didn't even know to attribute correctly. If you're in the 92%, it's not a reflection of your service quality. Plenty of excellent, longtime dealers showed up nowhere in our check. It's a reflection of an information gap that's fixable once you know it's there.

Either way, the only way to know where you stand is to check — not guess.

See where you stand

We publish an ongoing public leaderboard of which security companies actually get recommended by AI at mostrecommendedhomesecurity.com. You can look up your market and see who's showing up right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did you decide which 1,882 companies to check?

We pulled a broad mix of U.S. security and alarm companies, from large regional providers to small independent dealers, aiming for a realistic cross-section of the industry rather than a hand-picked list.

Does this mean the other 92% are worse companies?

No. Being left out of ChatGPT's answers reflects how a company's information appears across the web, not the quality of its installs, service, or monitoring. Many well-run, established dealers were part of that 92%.

Is this the same as showing up in Google search results?

No. Search rankings and AI recommendations are different systems. A company can rank fine on Google Maps and still never get named when someone asks ChatGPT directly for a recommendation.

What can a dealer actually do about this?

The first step is finding out where you currently stand, since most owners have never checked. From there, the fix usually involves strengthening how consistently and clearly your business is described and reviewed across the web so AI tools have something solid to recommend.
