We Checked 1,882 Security Companies Against ChatGPT — 92% Were Invisible

Our July 2026 benchmark asked ChatGPT about 1,882 real U.S. alarm and security companies. Only 8% ever got recommended by name. Here's what that means for dealers.

Watch the 40-second breakdown above.

What we actually measured

In July 2026, we ran a benchmark against 1,882 real U.S. security and alarm companies. For each one, we asked ChatGPT the kinds of questions a homeowner actually types in — things like "who's a good alarm company near me" or "who should I call for home security monitoring."

Then we checked: did ChatGPT ever mention that company by name?

The number that should worry every dealer

Only 151 companies — 8% of the total — ever got recommended by name. The other 92% never came up at all. Not once. Not mentioned, not suggested, not even in a supporting sentence.

That's not a ranking problem. That's an invisibility problem. These are real, operating security companies — trucks on the road, techs answering calls, customers paying RMR every month — and as far as ChatGPT is concerned, they don't exist.

Why this matters more than it used to

For decades, the way people found a security company was pretty simple: phone book, word of mouth, a sign in a neighbor's yard, maybe a local ad. You didn't have to think much about "discoverability" — you just had to be in the neighborhood long enough.

That's changing fast. More and more, the first move someone makes when they need an alarm company — or when they're frustrated with their current one and thinking about switching — is to ask Google and ChatGPT who's good. It's the new front door. And our benchmark shows that for 92% of dealers, that front door is locked from the outside.

Think about what that means in practice. A homeowner moves to a new area and asks for a recommendation. Someone's monitoring contract is up and they're shopping around. A renter wants a system installed before move-in. In every one of these moments, an AI assistant is quietly acting like a referral source — and most dealers never get mentioned in that conversation, no matter how good their service actually is.

This isn't about being a bad company

We want to be clear about something: getting left out of ChatGPT's answers has nothing to do with call quality, install quality, or how long you've been in business. It's about whether the information that helps an AI system recognize and trust your company even exists in a form it can find. Reviews, structured business information, consistent details across the web, a real presence AI systems can actually read — these are the things that separate the 8% from the 92%, not how good your techs are.

That's actually the encouraging part. This is fixable. It's not about being the biggest or most established name in your market — it's about being visible in the places AI systems are pulling their answers from.

Where your company stands right now

We publish an ongoing, public leaderboard of how security and alarm companies show up in AI recommendations at mostrecommendedhomesecurity.com. You can look up your market and see who's currently getting named — and who isn't.

If you want a direct answer for your own company, we also offer a free AI visibility check at /audit. It tells you, plainly, whether ChatGPT and other AI tools currently know your business exists — and if not, what's missing.

Given that 92% of the companies we checked came back invisible, it's worth five minutes to find out which side of that number you're on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly did the benchmark measure?

We asked ChatGPT common consumer-style questions about finding a home security or alarm company, then checked whether each of 1,882 real U.S. companies ever got mentioned by name in the responses. Only 151 companies, or 8%, showed up at all.

Does being invisible to ChatGPT mean my company is doing something wrong?

Not necessarily. It usually means the information AI systems rely on — reviews, business details, consistent web presence — isn't set up in a way they can find and trust. It's a visibility gap, not a quality judgment.

Why does this matter if my business already gets referrals and repeat customers?

Word of mouth still matters, but more people are starting their search by asking an AI assistant before they ever call a neighbor. If you're invisible there, you're missing the exact moment someone is deciding who to trust.

How do I find out if my company shows up in ChatGPT's answers?
