We Asked ChatGPT to Recommend a Security Company 1,882 Times — Here's What Happened

Our July 2026 benchmark checked 1,882 U.S. security and alarm companies against ChatGPT. Only 8% ever got recommended by name. Here's what that means for dealers.

Watch the 40-second breakdown above.

Why We Ran This Benchmark

More and more homeowners are skipping the search engine altogether. Instead of typing "security company near me" into Google, they're just asking Google and ChatGPT directly: "who's a good alarm company I can trust?" That conversational answer is quietly becoming the new front door for our industry — and most dealers have no idea whether they're even in the room when that conversation happens.

So in July 2026, we decided to find out. We took a list of 1,882 U.S. security and alarm companies — small independents, regional players, well-known names — and checked them against ChatGPT to see who actually gets recommended by name when people ask.

The Numbers

The results were more lopsided than we expected.

  • 1,882 companies checked.
  • 151 of them — just 8% — ever came up as a named recommendation.
  • 92% never came up at all. Not mentioned once.

That's not a close race. That's a small handful of companies capturing nearly all of the visibility, while the vast majority sit completely outside the conversation.

What "Invisible" Actually Means

Being invisible to ChatGPT doesn't mean your company is doing bad work. It doesn't mean your technicians aren't skilled or your response times aren't fast. It means that when someone asks an AI tool for a trustworthy recommendation, your name simply never surfaces — so you never even get the chance to compete for that customer.

Think about how differently people shop today. A homeowner who just moved, or someone whose system keeps false-alarming, doesn't always call three companies and compare quotes anymore. Increasingly, they ask an AI assistant to just tell them who's good. If your company isn't part of that answer, you're not losing the deal — you're losing it before the deal ever starts.

Why Only a Few Companies Get Named

AI tools like ChatGPT build their recommendations from patterns across the web — reviews, mentions, structured business information, consistency of your name and details across directories, and how clearly your business explains what it does and where. Companies that show up tend to have a strong, consistent digital footprint that AI models can actually read and trust. Companies that don't show up usually aren't doing anything wrong — they just haven't been set up to be legible to AI in the first place.

This is a newer kind of visibility problem. It's not about ranking on page one of Google anymore. It's about whether an AI assistant, asked a plain question by a real homeowner, would think to say your name at all.

Where You Can See the Full Picture

We've published the full results publicly at mostrecommendedhomesecurity.com, so any dealer can see how the industry lines up — who's showing up, and how big that 8% vs. 92% gap really is.

If you want to know exactly where your own company stands, we also offer a free AI visibility check at /audit. It takes a few minutes and tells you plainly whether ChatGPT currently recommends your business, and what's likely keeping you out of the conversation if it doesn't.

The Real Question

The benchmark isn't really about us — it's a mirror. 1,882 companies went through this check, and only 151 came out the other side visible. The uncomfortable question every dealer should be asking is simple: if a customer asked ChatGPT right now, would your name come up? For 92% of the industry, the honest answer is no.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly did you test in this benchmark?

We checked 1,882 U.S. security and alarm companies against ChatGPT to see how many of them ever get recommended by name when asked a plain, direct question about trustworthy providers. We only measured ChatGPT for this specific benchmark.

Does being invisible to ChatGPT mean my company is doing something wrong?

Not necessarily. It usually means your business information and online presence aren't structured in a way AI tools can easily read and trust, not that your service is lacking. It's a visibility gap, not a quality judgment.

How can I see where my company stands?

You can check the public results at mostrecommendedhomesecurity.com to see how the industry breaks down, and use the free AI visibility check at /audit to see your own company's specific standing.

Is this the same as SEO or Google ranking?

No. This is about whether conversational AI tools recommend your business by name when someone asks directly, which is a different and newer kind of visibility than traditional search engine ranking.
